Has his role been more of a celebrity or of a leader? Does it even matter if people look at him as “cool” and does it affect how he makes decisions. This article criticizes an ad put out by Karl Rove, that depicts Obama’s “cool” behavior as a problem where it might have little effect at all.

( final draft)

Are young kids growing up too fast? Children as young as 6th and 7th grade now attend weekend “parties” and watch MTV on the regular all the while children as young as 3 know how to text on their parents phone and change the T.V channel. With the dawn of so many electronic devices, such as gaming systems, cell phones, and also media such as online social networks and more mature television shows, kids are more and more exposed to the world of adults. Kids aren’t really kids anymore. They become consumed with acting older than they really are. Long gone are the days of playing outdoors and board games, kids would rather spend countless hours playing video games, watching T.V, or browsing face book. “Children watch an average of fours hours of television daily, which can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior (“Children and TV…”)”. They have lost sight of what childhood really means. But it is bound to happen when your born into a society that promotes this behavior and considers it “normal”. Children attend dances where inappropriate and ‘mature’ dancing (known as “grinding”) is considered acceptable behavior. Kids in middle school are too young to be engaging in this behavior and teachers and parents should learn to prevent it. With the introduction of text messaging and personal cell-phones for kids in lower and middle school, it is easier for kids engage in risky behavior, such as inappropriate or sexual language, things that would not have been tolerated merely 10 years ago.

Not only is television to blame for children’s inappropriate behavior, the internet is just as responsible. Children gain access to the internet at a progressively younger age each year. Parents push technology with their children from the time the are old enough to hold their head up by themselves. Children have become use to technology and how thing operate, so once they hit their pre-teen years, of course they are going to be drawn to cell-

phones, internet, television, and other forms of media. Media is an endless circulation of material, and most of the time it is not sorted by age-appropriateness. Children and teens have access to a scary amount of material which has created a completely different growth environment than even a decade ago. And it shows in their values and behaviors.

Children have become more and more aggressive in their mentalities and behaviors since the dawning of wide spread television and enhanced forms of media. Since the 1960’s, psychologists such as Alfred Bandura have presented studies of children which prove correlation between media violence and child behavior (Earles, Alexander, Johnson, Liverpool). The more media violence and inappropriate behavior children are exposed to and the response to the behavior ( negative = punishment or positive = no consequences) has a drastic influence on behavior they begin to perceive as acceptable; this is especially true they younger the child is.

On the left is a picture of two kids playing their hand-held play stations…kids now days can operate computers, passwords, and cell phones

easier than most adults can. They learn so quickly at this age and it only takes one or two times for them to remember how to access a program on their parents computer.

Television programs and music have most contributed to children’s increase in more adult behavior. Shows such as MTV’s Jersey Shore and others which promote violence, excessive drinking, sex, and poor self-worth show young kids that its cool and safe to partake in those types of behavior. “Kids, are exposed to sex in all kinds of ways — not only in television programs and television ads, but also through the Internet, video games, and old-fashioned print media (DeNoon)”.

Below are a few videos of LITTLE KIDS re-enacting Jersey Shore stunts…There were a few that were over the top that I couldn’t even bring myself to post

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlHmIKqPCsg

I believe the key phrase said is “Who wants free shots?!”…..seriously?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyklk-2Bl6A&feature=related

Media and society should condone these behaviors in young children. Above all, parents should intervene and try their best to not allow their children to be so affected by societal ’norms’. They should let their kids be kids. Without the interference of video games, inappropriate television shows, and access to adult material on TV and online. In this day and age, it is ever more important to watch and monitor what your children are doing and watching. These young kids grow up into young adults with the same perceptions that they learn early in life. Avoid it. Put your kids on the path to a healthy mind and self-perception.

Are young kids growing up too fast? Children as young as 6th and 7th grade now attend weekend “parties” and watch MTV on the regular. When I was that age I wasn’t out past 8pm and stayed mostly in the neighborhood, playing childhood games and still enjoying the naïve activities. I was very naïve child and did not know much about the growth up world or even the social activities of older kids. I knew nothing about drinking or drugs or anything of the sorts. And all of my friends were this way too. We still enjoyed watching cartoons on Saturday mornings and going places with our parents. We didn’t have cell phones or texting and video games hadn’t even made a big impact in society yet. Now, things have changed drastically.

With the dawn of so many electronic devices, such as gaming systems, cell phones, and also media such as online social networks and more mature television shows, kids are more and more exposed to the world of adults. But it is bound to happen when your born into a society that promotes this behavior and considers it “normal”. Children attend dances where “grinding” is an appropriate form of dancing. My high school considered this form of dancing offensive and inappropriate and banned it from dances. And I think that in order to promote self worth grinding should be banned, at least from middle school dances. With the introduction of text messaging and personal cell-phones for kids in lower and middle school, it is easier for kids engage in risky behavior, such as inappropriate or sexual language, things that would not have been tolerated merely 10 years ago.
